Blogs, Wikis and Podcast



A. Terminology: blogs, wikis and podcast

1. Social Software

  • ICT tools which encourage users to collaborate and communicate online. Typically thay allow multiple authorship, and content is generated by the users.

2. Blogroll

  • Alist of links to other blogs.

3. Edublog

  • A blog used in education.

4. Blogfade

  • The lack of enthusiasm one feels for one’s blog, after a time.

5. Blogger.com

  • A well-known site where one can easily set up a blog.

6. Vlog

  • A video blog.

7. Wiki

  • A collaborative webspace consisting of several linked web pages, that can be edited by several people.

8. Wikipedia

  • A well-known collaborative encyclopedia on the internet.

9. Pbwiki

  • A user-friendly site where people can easily set up a wiki

10.Podcast

  • An audio or video file which can be downloaded to a personal computer or to a mobile device such as an MP3 player.

11.Podcatching software

  • The software needed to download a podcast.

12.Vodcast

  • A podcast in the form of video.

13.Coursecasting

  • Course lectures delivered in podcast format – increasingly popular in tertiary education.

14.podOmatic

  • A user-friendly site where one can easily create and record a podcast.

B. Blogs

1. A blog with personal information, such as hobbies and interests, family or home.

  • Suitable for student blog

2. A blog with links to further explore topics covered in a speaking class

  • Suitable for class blog

3. A blog setting extra homework activities for learners.

  • Suitable for tutor blog

4. A blog of class project work (posters produced, text written, photograph)

  • Suitable for class blog and student blog

5. A blog describing learners’ summer holiday

  • Suitable for student blog

6. A blog describing different festival days in the learners’ country/countries

  • Suitable for student blog, tutor blog and class blog


C. Wikis

  1. What is the essential difference between a blog and wiki?
    • Blog consisting one page, but wiki consisting several pages
  2. Which of the activities described in activity B above could also work well in a wiki?

· All of them, because actually wiki has the same design as blog. However, wiki has several page in one address.


D. Podcast

  1. Lerners listen to podcast
    • Advantages : Learners can find native speakers

It will be easy and simple

· Disadvantages : ~

  1. Learners create podcast

· Advantage : Learners can create their own practice to be uploaded

· Disadvantages : It does not work well for several learners which only have to listen, they create podcast, but not in a good purpose.
